The 2024-2025 Nikon Film and Photo Contest has unveiled its winners. Selected from a staggering global field, they reveal one of the competition’s most exciting line ups yet…

The winners of the Nikon Film and Photo Contest 2024 to 2025 have been announced, marking another standout year for one of the world’s largest and most respected imaging competitions.

Championing creative talent for more than half a century, the awards remain free to enter and open to all photographers and filmmakers of any age or background, which this year resulted in a global pool of entries from more than 180 countries and regions, all responding to the theme of ‘Inspire’. “Each entry offered a glimpse into the values and inspirations people hold dear, shared from around the world,” says Lead judge Sarah Leen. “This year’s ‘Inspire’ theme encouraged a wide range of entries, and the diverse creativity expressed was hugely impressive.”

Photographers were invited to submit a single image or a short photo story of two to five frames, with many of the winning entries capturing deeply human moments such as farewells to a childhood home, the raw intensity of childbirth, and the threats posed to Indigenous cultures. Filmmakers could enter a super short 20 to 40 second piece or a three to five minute film, with this year’s winning works exploring themes ranging from environmental respect and cultural preservation to serenity in chaos, personal loss, and the lingering echoes of the pandemic.

The top creators were recognised with a variety of prizes including a Nikon Z8 for Grand Prize winners, a Nikon Z6III kit for Excellence Award recipients, and a Nikon Z50II kit for those honoured with Special Encouragement and General Public Awards, the latter of which was chosen by public vote.

The award-winning works will be showcased at exhibitions and screenings in major cities around the world and at Nikon facilities, with selected photographs captured on Nikon cameras also set to appear in the 2026 Nikon Calendar.

“I am deeply grateful for the acknowledgment of this small dream that has grown into something seen around the world. Created in Lagos, Nigeria, during the COVID-19 lockdown, when I was moved by Yimeeka’s ‘Finding Serenity’ poem. My friends and I worked together on this film, exploring peace in chaos and beauty in uncertainty. This film is a celebration for me, a testament to turning a poem into a visual artefact. Photo Story Grand Prize: “Farewell-able” by Lei Yang (born in China, lives in Japan)

“When we move from one place to another, we say, ‘Goodbye’ or ‘Farewell’ to express our connection to people and places. Before leaving China, I photographed my hometown and considered what ‘Farewell’ meant to me. At that time, I parted with people, places and versions of myself. I realised that some separations are simple, while others are filled with sorrow. Farewell-able explores the emotional scale of goodbye through what I found hardest to release. I’m deeply grateful to Nikon for selecting this work. It has allowed a personal farewell to be seen by more people.”
